Identity Theft has been around since the dawn of time.

Even before Erickson taught the world about Identity Crisis, we have all felt it in our bones. Philosophers from ancient times have waxed lyrical about our existential crises, and given us syllogisms and systems that have never settled our achy sinews of being.

Does this point to some loss, and perhaps thieving that has occurred? If we are searching, something must have been lost.

While political and social sciences explore the changing definitions of ‘identity’, the behemoth that is the financial industry has adopted the term ‘identity theft’ for what is an increasing problem in our modern, digitalized world.

I want to argue that the term ‘identity’ is so important that we ought to use it well and wisely.

But first, let’s check in on the experience of Identify Theft as it’s used today.

This is the kind of text you don’t ever want to get from a friend:

“The bank just informed me of a massive withdrawal that I did not make.”

It’s hard to know how to respond. I cannot comfort her by making up the amount she has lost. I have no solutions for what she can do. So we just prayed and waited.
